Two brothers who allege they had been victims of sexual abuse by a former Catholic priest have settled their lawsuit for $2.7 million.
The brothers — who are identified as John Doe A and John Doe B in the lawsuit — sued the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2014, alleging it permitted Daniel McCormack to be ordained as a priest and placed him in a church to teach and mentor kids regardless of getting know-how of prior sexual misconduct allegations against him.
Cardinal Francis George appointed McCormack to serve as pastor of St. Agatha’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Westside College in 2000 on the city’s West Side, a post in which McCormack served till 2005.
He was placed in the position regardless of the archdiocese’s know-how that McCormack faced prior allegations of sexual abuse against each fellow seminarians and young kids in earlier locations he served in the 1980s and 1990s, according to the Does’ lawsuit.
McCormack’s alleged abuse of the Doe brothers started close to the finish of a summer time camp plan they attended at the church and college in 2004 and went into the 2004-2005 college year, stated Mark A. Brown, a companion at Lane & Lane LLC who represented the plaintiffs. They did not attend the college but had been attending a every day right after-college plan at the time, he stated.
And like lots of victims of sexual abuse, Brown stated, the brothers suffered a character modify right after the alleged abuse occurred.
“They began applying drugs and alcohol to dull themselves,” he stated. “They lost trust in adults and authority figures in the church … and then a single of them had a couple of short stints receiving mental well being assist in a mental well being facility.”
The brothers stayed silent about the alleged abuse and even denied its occurrence till a household member saw news that McCormack was arrested on sexual abuse charges and started speaking to them about it, Brown stated.
“As soon as he was arrested, they sort of felt like ‘OK, I’m not imagining it, I didn’t do something incorrect,’” he stated. “It was extremely hard to do so and say ‘Yes, this occurred to me’ and lastly speak about it, but it wasn’t till they discovered that this was taking place that they had been in a position to do that.”
George was initially named as a defendant in the lawsuit but was removed right after his death in 2015.
The parties engaged in litigation, and the defendants took depositions on the case but under no circumstances filed an answer to the Does’ lawsuit. Adam T. Rick, an associate
