Grocery ShoppersMore than 30 million American adults visit the grocery every day. That means one in every seven adults goes to the supermarket each day. With such volume, the trend may seem arbitrary, but this massive shopping population actually follows patterns.

People counter systems help businesses make their operations more effective. It is important for store owners to analyze the trends of their customers to determine what they need.

Who’s in Store Today?

According to The Time Use Institute, women take two-thirds of the grocery shoppers’ population. Only 10 percent of the men go to the shop on an average day, while 17 percent of the women go.

As expected, crowds in supermarkets peak during Saturdays — the day when all the supplies in the fridge were already consumed throughout the weekdays — with more than 41 million shoppers across America. This is followed by Fridays and Sundays, while Mondays and Tuesdays are the least busy with only 29 million.

In addition, men go shopping on weekends. Thirty-seven percent of the male population come to the stores on Saturdays and Sundays, while only 31 percent of women do. This tells shop owners the perfect timing to male necessities like shaving creams in convenient locations.

Sunday shoppers are usually in the younger group, with an average of 43 years old compared to Thursday with 49. But, with a different consumer culture, these younger population will change the shopping future.

Timing of the Crowd

Aside from the daily differences in the shoppers’ demographic pattern, the profile also changes within the time of the day. The most number of shoppers come in stores from 4pm to 5pm during weekdays, while during weekends, it is between 11am to late afternoon.

There are younger shoppers, those from a lower earning age group, from mid-morning until the evening. From 6pm to 8pm comes the higher earning customers. This attributes to the fact that professionals come out of work around the evening, making it their common shopping time.

Analyzing consumer behavior is crucial for businesses that sell a variety of goods to different types of customers. Knowing the target buyers and the goods they need allows business to make better sales plans.
